My Introductory Week

Hello all, how you' all doing? For the ones who noticed, I was on a introductory week of my new study (Cultural Antropology & Development Studies, Catholic University of Nijmegen - from september 1th 2004 the Radboud University), and I had a hell of a time! I said earlier that I would be back September 1th (Wednesday), but I left earlier.

Why?

In a nutshell: picture 150 new students of all kinds of studies (Medicine, Biology, Greek & Latin, Dentistry) in a dirty farm on the countryside, two showers, two toilets, a wild party, a fire extinguisher on the loose, dozens of students running out of the farm at 4:00 in the morning, a guy unconscious, firemen, an ambulance. No fire, but some sort of sick joke. That was what happened last night.

Now, that was the bad part. I'm glad though that there was a lot of good stuff among it. My introductory week began at Sunday 22th, in the Dutch city of Nijmegen. I was one of the few guys who decided to go for this study, I found out. Meaning a lot of girls (not always a bad thing though ... ). The week was centered around partying, partying, PARTYING! As in: partying till 4:30 in the morning, a lot of beer, being up early the next morning for another day. Seven days. Now, I managed to stay sober, though beer is tasty (as most of you know). I realize now that going out seven days in a row can be very exhausting. I'm still tired actually (very tired). Now, Nijmegen is - as I heard nimh saying somewhere - a very LEFTISH city, if not the most leftish (university) city of the Netherlands. As a socialist, I did like it. We had this sort of market, on which all sorts of organizations, clubs etc. try to attract new members among the first-years. There were also a lot of political parties. Now, as already being member of the Dutch Green party (GroenLinks; GreenLeft), I decided to have a look. I can assure you: there were merely leftish parties promoting their cause. No right winged parties, no Christian parties. No, there were merely leftish parties: the Labor Party, GreenLeft, the Socialist Party and the Dutch Communist Party. It was beautiful! The vibe is just brilliant, leftish, NICE! Cool

Very Happy

I'm glad to hear that you had such a great time Very Happy.

Did everyone have to go home, then, after the whole sick joke?

welcome back, Rick.

well, I don't know before that Nijmegen is leftist. I like this too, because I'm a liberal socialist. :-)

The joke is typical for Introductory, had this you surprise?

Great introductory, I would glad to be present there. Smile

Well, no, but the atmosphere was just totally screwed up. Now, this weekend in a farm (the introductory week consisted of two parts, the first part in Nijmegen, the second part on a farm on the countryside) was voluntary. In our group we had eight students, but only I and two other girls actually went. That was yesterday. One of the girls left after some hours, she felt sick. After the "joke" thing last night the other girl just wanted to go home too, she was tired, she didn't like the people (I didn't like them too), the farm was just too dirty. She left too. Now, after that, I decided to leave too. As I said, the atmosphere was totally screwed up. People were angry after the things happening last night, many left, others wanted to leave but couldn't get it arranged. Luckily enough, the location was just some twenty minutes from where I live, so I called up my parents, and they picked me up.

When I was a tutor for the newbies, I always started with addresses for best pubs, cheapest copy chops, names of docents to avoid, places where to meet the nicest girls ... ...

Sounds, you made similar experiences

Welcome back and enjoy the real life here before starting to live in Nijmwegen's intellectual sheres

Well, point is that the "joke" was not planned, and it was an idea of people from the area, who thought a party was going on. The leadership did not know about this. Now imagine, there were already some dozens of people trying to sleep, when some moron ran inside with a fire extinguisher and sprinkled all these people, and all their stuff. Now, I can assure you: that is not healthy for you. There was just panic. It looked like the barn was burning, and it was scary to see all these people running in their nightclothes out of the barn in the middle of the night, their eyes and mouths covered because of the stuff (I don't know the English translation) coming out of the fire extinguisher. One guy who was asleep inhaled a lot of it and got unconscious - they found him like 15 minutes later. That is no fun Thok. The firemen said that people were not allowed to sleep anymore in these rooms, and there were like 100 people forced to get their stuff and find another place to sleep at 4:30 in the morning.

Jessis, Rick, what a thing to happen, all the foam from the extinguishers sopping over you. I hope that the foam didn't ruin anything valuable. Were the people whom you disliked just random pranksters who didn't go to the school, or actual students?

Well, I had the luck that I was in another room, but it's strange to see a person running into the room screaming 'FIRE!' Confused I don't really know whether it ruined something valuable. I do know that the pranksters were some people from a village nearby, who thought a party was going on. They left after the incident.

Sorry, Rick. I think I missed the point. Generally, revelers and practical jokers accompany all shenanigans with off key singing.

Yeah, it's freaky, Rick; being on a farm and being awoken by people whose rooms have been broken into. But, you'll always remember it ;D!

Very Happy I'll always remember it. But because of it I got a serious lack of sleep, like I had the seven days before that, and I was (actually: still am) so tired that I decided to go. Though I'm proud of the fact that of all the people in my group, I'm the one who stayed longest and participated in all of the activities Cool

PARTIES  No, there was also some serious stuff: a historical trip through downtown Nijmegen, a visit to the Afrika-museum (Africa-museum) etc.
