I think if I were writing a movie related essay on American work and leisure I would consider the diversity of leisure activities that Americans have indulged in over the years. I believe that reality would indicate that not everyone who works hard also "plays hard." I say the movie Joy which was a wonderful biography of Joy Mangano. She is the epitome of the American success story and she seems quite ordinary in her leisure activities-fun with family.
One of my favorite movies about hard work and the African American experience is The Butler, based on the story of long-time White House butler Eugene Allen. From extremely destitute means he makes it to the White House and it appears his off time was spent with friends and family.
Recent movies that glorify financial success and extreme excess include The Big Short, Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle.
