It's more complex, but basically, astronomers realized that Pluto is just one of many, many small objects in its neighborhood, the Kuiper belt (everything beyond Neptune). One astronomer i heard on the radio yesterday pointed out that Pluto has not scooped up everything in its orbital path.

Thanks. Still sounds discriminatory, but I admit ignorance of the standards.

I think they've been making those standards up as they go along. The explanation that one astronomer made was the most sensible, i thought. All other planets has either swept up or captured as moons, all the objects in their orbits.
