What caused these alternating sandstone layers

I was in eastern Arizona recently, at Canyon De Chelly, and saw sandstone with fairly straight and uniform and distinct alternating layers of red sand about 2 mm thick and white sand or other white material about 0.5 mm thick. In what kind of setting might these have been laid down?
