It has an old sticker on the back saying that it's from the Chester dale collection 1963.10.178 national gallery of art in Washington. It says sizes and dates also. When I looked it up on the museums website, it says not on view with the exact numbers on back. My question, do museums catalogue copies with the same numbers as the originals?

@Kk1985,
Might be a good idea to call that museum and ask.

@chai2,
the chester dale collection had a show n the nat gallery east wing about 4 years ago. You sure you dont have a giclee print? they are makin them pretty realistic even with all the gallery tags.

If this is a real painting and its provenance would be right (Chester Dale was an Atlanta collector). THERE IS NO STAUTE OF LIMITATIONS ON MISSING NATIONAL TREASURES.
If you hve been honest (and are not dicking around with us to try to show how smart you are), if you get it to the right owners , there probably is a reward up to 10% of its insured value (That could be several million bucks dude)

Thank you for your answers, I will contact the museum and see what can be done to check, it looks old with the corners of the board worn, and the sticker is def a dated typewriter look....I was nervous to ask because I'm not sure if it's real, but worth checking out. Thank you again, much appreciated!

@Kk1985,
If it IS a giclee print, It should have some sort of attribute to the quality standardof the litho or print company. Look realllly close at an area where there are lots of tonal changes and see whether you can see any fine dots under a magnifying glass. A giclee print has several deposition tricks and one is actually a dot matrix except with some "surface tooth" to emulate brushwork

Damn, I wish Lightwizard were still among us. He was a guy that knew everything about prints v "posters" (as he called most of the limited edition print art" thats signed by well known artists.
