I blocked a friend I now want to "Friend." How can I friend him without him knowing he'd been block?

I have a friend, in real life, that I had blocked for a period of time on Facebook, and had told him I was on FB hiatus while I just continued to use FB and have him blocked. I now want to friend him. Any advice on how I can make my profile look like it was inactive, at least to him, for a certain period of time? Thanks!
