ANTIQUE NAMES

Reply Wed 8 Jan, 2003 10:20 pm
Sitting here, recalling names of actual relatives from the past. There were:
Villa, Ploner, Appalonie, DeWitt, Hattie, Muriel, Rowan, Hughlan, and quite a few more I can't call to mind. Feel free to add to the list if you like. All I ask is that they be legitemate names.

Lots of Ethels, Celias, Harrys, Yentas, Louises, Jacks, etc. Since we are Ashkenazi Jews (mostly; I'm also part Sephardic), we name after the dead, so the names keep repeating. And now, we get similar names (to be more modern) but the same Hebrew names, e. g. Heather for Harry, Melinda for Murray, Corinne for Celia, Adam for Alvin, etc. Now, some of the names are coming around again, like Molly, Sam and Jack - these are all kids under 18 yet named for people who were born in the late 1800s.

Odus (that's how my great grandpappy spelled it). Jethro. Anything biblical with more than three syllables. (Ezekiel comes to mind.)

My grandmother's name was Myrtle. My parents spared me from actually being named that, thank goodness. Very Happy

That depend on what YOU call 'antique': Beatrice, Rosa, Rebecca, Frederick for instance are actually very modern names in Germany.

I almost got named after my grandmother, Agnes, but my dad put his foot down. I was once perusing the family tree of a friend, and twin girls were born, children #8 and 9, and they were named Silent and Submit. Ancient names that were inspired by virtues such as Patience, Charity and Faith I can understand, but Silence and Submit?

After 7 children, I guess those parents were going for some Silence and Submission in the house!

My grandmother and her sister were named Tillie and Lillie. We once named pet rabbits after them - I don't think they were too flattered!

My father's name was Gustavus Adolphus (we still don't know why). When each of my son's three sons were born, I asked if one could be named for my father. So what we've got are Matthew, Dillon, and Zachary.
