When I screwed up my software--apparently by attempting to use MacKeeper-- my No. 1 Son, a most remarkably competent expert in the digital field, providing my Better Half a new system, gave me Mom's old one, which for the most part works just fine; but...

Among other difficulties my "Addresses" icon (apparently the blacked-out upper half of a male figure) is absent and I miss it most sorely If you should happen to know off the top of your head, please advise how tho restore it

Thanks all

@dalehileman,
No idea, personally as I'm not a Mac-user. Forgive me, Dale, but why not call your number 1 son? I don't get it?

Rag he hates to communicate by email, and I don't blame him, like chat forums, such a waste of one's morn

He will fix it for me when he visits on Mme Day, as well as a couple of other problems, like my new software gratuitously changing "Mem" to "Mme"

I realize I should go click somewhere but at 84 don't remember where

Your internet provider is armed with Internet specialists to help customers with their software (bug) problems pertaining to all types of computers. When calling them tell them you need technical assistance with your computer software.

@nydia2013,
That's ridiculous. Ever follow your own advice? What happened when you tried to call your ISP with an application problem or an OS problem?

Lastly, why would he expect any such help from his ISP? he connects to the Internet just fine. He would likely be directed to Apple network support.

A simple question posed to an experienced Mac user (not me) will solve this problem. Don't listen to this malarkey.

I have been successful with bugs whenever I called them. I'll admit I do not use MacKeeper software because they wanted to charge me for the software. Whenever I have a mac problem I call Comcast my Internet Provider for technical assistance. I have even had them come to my house but most times now due to new technology they just enter into my computer as a third person, take control of it, and correct the problem.

@nydia2013,
I think you're experience is out-of-the norm.

My experience with ISP support has been (when and if they ever come on the phone live) that I might not live long enough to get a useful answer - unless it has to do with an Internet connectivity issue.

Furthermore, Comcast has been voted pretty low by many consumers and has about the worst level of customer and/or tech support of all the major ISPs. However, your mileage may vary.

**********************************************

Back to the subject at hand, if it were me, I'd either call Apple Tech support or try a Mac User group and pose the question on there.

Actually, Dale, have you asked your wife to help you? Perhaps she knows or can help you compare the 2 application settings between you old computer and the new one?

{Edit: I Googled MacKeper on the 'Net. This is generally a useful step I try first whenever I have a problem. Here's the link to MacKeepr and its use: http://www.imore.com/avoid-mackeeper}

An excerpt from the linked page may answer your issues, Dale:
"Literally every time I work in the computer store, we'll get a customer whose Mac is plagued with problems they don't understand: Their Mac is acting slow. It crashes. And more. And in more cases than not, we find that they've installed a program called MacKeeper. Removing MacKeeper fixes the problem. So what is MacKeeper and why should you avoid it? Read on for details

MacKeeper was originally developed by a company called Zeobit and was sold a couple of years ago to another firm called Kromtech. The software purports to be a suite of more than a dozen individual utilities that are actually supposed to improve the performance and stability of your Mac — antivirus software, optimization software, junk removal tools and more.

MacKeeper uses scare ads that appear as "pop-under" ads on web sites, telling people to clean their Macs. The pop-under business is the first thing I really don't like about MacKeeper. Quite frankly, I think it's a real bottom-feeder technique and a really low-class way to do business, and it tells me that they're not concerned with what people think of them.

Yes, contacting a Mac User group is one sure way to go because when calling Comcast the wait might be quite long unless as you say it has to to do with accessing the Internet or Cable problem, things that are more urgently needed. But they do have computer experts there. The first time I called with an Internet problem the technician could not fix my mac as he was only familiar with non-Macs. So that very same day, within an hour, they sent a Mac specialist over and there was no charge whatsoever.

@dalehileman,
Sorry Dale upon my re-reading...I notice that your problem App called MacKeeper should be uninstalled. That is something that is currently on your computer now is it not? This should be uninstalled...but I won't go there with you.

I will refer you to an online Mac User's group for your answer. Unless you know how to do uninstall.

[edit: here's the MacWorld link that shows you how to do Unistall of MacKeeper]:

@dalehileman,
It seems that he's the best source for fixing it. Why not call him and ask him if he can tell you how to restore it? You know that he can log on from remote to your computer with an app, don't you?

Just a few point for the sake of clarity: Which addresses do you refer to? Are you talking about addresses as in your email addresses? If you are, then you have to re-add whatever addresses that you want on the current MaC in your email account. Bring them over from your former computer.

If you're talking about your Internet faves ..as 'net addresses, likewise you need to copy them over... from the other computer...perhaps through your email. Copy over the list of addresses on her computer and mail them over through your email account mailed to yourself..

If this is all too much, then you'll need to wait for him to re-establish these addresses or icon which is disabled. I can't help you any more than that as I'm not a Mac user.

Tho much smarter than me, as I'm sure you will agree, she's not much into the PC. My No. 1 Son however is an expert in the field. Only thing, I won't be seeing him till Mem day

Thanks for that link; I've also heard from several sources that MacKeeper causes more problems than it addresses

@dalehileman,
You're welcome. I wish you luck.

You never explained about what addresses you referring to. Maybe someone else who's ac savvy might see what you're describing and understand how to help? Remember that Windows OS users outnumber Mac OS users by 8 or 10 to 1; however, someone here might understand what you mean and guide you better than I can.

Dale, are you missing the list of bookmarks for your favorite websites or the list of email contacts?

It is difficult to know from your descriptions which it is so I don't know where to even begin to try to help.

Okay, now let's narrow down what the problem is with your list of email contacts.

Is the list of addresses accessible by any method other than the icon on your menu bar?

If so, an easy fix is to create a new icon for it.

If the entire list is gone and not just the icon, there may be a way to restore it if you saved it online somewhere in a backup.
