Dairy milk isn't really established over there like it is here. I don't think anyone this side of the pond had problems remembering what the ad was for.
The ad got a lot of people talking at the time, many thought it was a real gorilla. It was very successful, and that's all adverts need to be. It's even got its own Wikipedia page.
