OCCOM dilemma, Do I have a moral obligation or not?

Reply Sun 20 Jun, 2004 10:54 am
I have a serious dilemma, and I don't know what to do. As most of you have probably guessed; I'm have no sense of self. I worry constantly about what others think of me and struggle to make every sentence as politically correct as possible. Having never being one to go against the grain of popular opinion, I now find myself in a quagmire of sorts. Today, like every other day, I was keeping my opinions to myself, minding my own business and doing my damdest to go with the flow, when suddenly this a startling question struck me… and frankly, scared the hell out of me. Fearing all forms of confrontation be they verbal, physical or even mental, this latest thought is quite perplexing. Are you ready?

Now I'm sure this question has been pondered for thousands of years, so perhaps one of you scholarly types can help me find an answer. I'm hoping and praying with all of my might that you can. I must find a way to sleep again. Okay.

Can a man have an obligation to kick another man in the ass?

Before you answer, consider: This man's actions are so despicable I can think of nothing else. It's eating me up inside like I had swallowed a ravenous bunny that craves carnage instead of sex Shocked (pretty disturbing, eh?)

Seriously though folks; this man has selfishly denied thousands of people access to something that no man, woman or child should ever be without. Our very lives are being irreversibly damaged by this selfish bastard's actions. I know what you're thinking… what kind of monster could do such a thing?

Now I happen to know the identity of this selfish beast… And, I can't help wondering if a solid kick in the ass might set him straight? The burden of this knowledge is weighting me down like a man trying to swim with a 1,000 pound bunny on his back Shocked (sorry to be so graphic).

Now, put yourself in my shoes. If you knew the identity of such a cretin… and you reasonably reasoned out the reasoning that a swift kick in the ass might just remedy the situation for all mankind… what would you do?

I think you are emotional because you've quit smoking.

If he's that much of a beast kicking him the ass will only piss him off and then you're going to get your ass kicked, and then you'll want a drink, and then you'll want a cigarette, and then I'll be calling you a pussy.

Stay off this slippery slope OBill, until you're feeling a litte more stable.

Then drive up to Raleigh and we'll go to a metal show and we can jump in the pit and kick a few folks around. It'll be fun.

I'm not a Quaker, but the Society of Friends has a notion that I'm very fond of:

"Who does God have but thee?" In other words, you see the problem--and therefore you have an obligation to Do Something about the problem.

Is physical violence the only answer? Is there a possibility of legal redress? Can you do nothing and still live with yourself? Will confronting this man cause complications for other people--like your family?

Hold your dominion.

Well.........................this IS a knotty problem. Would a kick in the ass somehow rearrange this man's neural connections? If not, all you would get is personal satisfaction, without solving the problem.

Is this denial of access something of which you have a personal concern? Are you convinced that people are entitled to that thing? Do you have a vested interest in seeing that people have access to the aforementioned whatever? If so, can you find a way to supply the something? Would you want to put out the effort to make sure that each person is supplied with whatever it is? What about each person getting it (whateverthehell "it" is) by him or herself?

It is not up to you to fight other people's battles. If you choose too, that is your lookout. It is also not up to you to demand something from another person. Unless you are willing to put your butt on the line, and supply other people whatever it is, I say, MYOB!

Polish your steel toed shoes , then run like hell. hehe!! I have to agree with phoenix on the point of self satisfaction.
IF that is the underlying desire ( 60% or more ) then no, dont do it. And if at all possible... ( doesnt sound like it is ) can you get this -thing- this person is denying everyone and do something with it yourself ? Are you in a position to do that?
Everyone has a moral obligation to -some extent- watch each others ass. If you can do so and help other people , yourself included , and it is that important.... why are you still on the computer? ;-)

Bill,

As much I agree he deserves it, I think kicking his ass isn't possible. It is nearly impossible to get past those Secret Service guys.

There are a lot of people who feel as angry as you do. Just do what they are doing and vote for Kerry.

Ah, you are probably right about that. But this is important. Really it is. And no, as bad as I'd like a cigarette, right now, not even an ass-kicking would drive me to it.

As usual Dys, I don't know what the hell you are talking about.

I don't even believe in God, but I love that notion!

Hold your dominion.

I'm hoping this is resolved before it comes down to an actual ass whooping.

That's the $100,000 question.

No, I'm sure kicking this man's ass would actually make me sad as can be.
Phoenix32890 wrote:

Absolutely I'm not the same without it.
Phoenix32890 wrote:

Entitled is way too strong a word. But it is a terrible shame that anyone should have to go without.

Phoenix32890 wrote:

Monetarily, no. Intelectually and spiritually, yes.

Phoenix32890 wrote:

Eh, I'm trying.

Phoenix32890 wrote:

I'm doing my very best. I'm probably doing it wrong... but I am trying.

Phoenix32890 wrote:

Hmmm, that one I'll have to think about.

Phoenix32890 wrote:

Oh boy... I sure hope someone else can come up with a better solution.

Phoenix32890 wrote:

On that count I'm probably going to hell for this one.

Phoenix32890 wrote:

Darlin, if I had it, we wouldn't need it from him.

Shewolfnm, there would be no self-satisfaction whatsoever, I assure you.

You are not stupid Kicky... But this is far more important than any political question.

Just trying to add a little humor to an otherwise serious subject. I guess it didn't come out very funny. Embarrassed

No Ebrown… despite everything he's denied us in the last month, he doesn't deserve an ass-kicking as bad as that guy. He is not in the government, Intel business and there's no news article about him on the computer. Forgive me. My alien Internet router is slow on this network. Web technology sucks. My assessment is that without access to his teaching, I'm less of a human being. In a meeting him off the net, I'd no doubt wish to shake his hand (not kick his ass). You see, it is his wisdom, knowledge and camaraderie that we are all being denied, simply because he doesn't like the look of this last paragraph.

Does that clear things up for you bunny?

hmmmmm, extrapolating from what you've provided, I'd say - stay out of it. What someone wants to offer in terms of teaching is not something they can or should be forced to provide. Intellectual property is just that.

Do other people want to learn what you've learned? If the answer is yes, they'll find a way to get it.
