i have tagged a friend on several posts and the only people what like it are our mutual friends, not any of her family who are not my friends - is this something you can restrict on facebook?
previous tagged posts by others have been liked etc by her family who are not friends with the poster,
my question is i suppose - have ONLY MY tagged posts been restricted?

Probably not.
The tagging adds a social signal to Facebook's database, and that signal is a connection between the photo and the profile of the person tagged. About the only thing you (might) be able to do is either restrict the privacy settings on the photo or share it only within a private group. Even then I'm not so sure that you'll block the social signal.
