Unifying Ethic
What is the Ethic that unifies Britain as a society or is there none?
This is not the same as 'culture' which is an abused term for almost anything other than an Ethic.
Fascists, Communists, Christians, Isis, and other religious-political-philosophical groups may all have certain values in common, albeit very few. But it would be outrageously absurd to exhibit this corpus of values as an Ethic uniting the country. Rather like saying we are at war with each other but united.
At a lesser extreme, various religious-philosophical groups in this country may all express acceptance of Human Rights [UN and European]. But these Rights do not therefore provide a unifying and over-arching ethic for society. It is merely an agreement that at present these 'faiths' do not conflict in certain matters. We may be sure Isis and others at the 'extreme' will not share the consensus. It leaves entirely open whether future interpretations of Islam, for instance, will try to water down these Rights - Sharia law insinuating itself to a greater extent. We can imagine a dilution beginning, as it has already, in a simple matter such as marriage!
England was at one time, ostensibly, united by a Protestant 'faith'. However this may have been interpreted. A modern over-arching Ethic need not be overtly religious, but it must stand prior to any and all factions in British society. If we are a democracy, then the choice is between what I broadly term Anarchism and Altruism. It may be strongly suspected that British society is moving towards Anarchism, which will merely prevent opposing 'faiths' directly warring with each other.

@RW Standing,
"What is the Ethic that unifies Britain as a society or is there none? "

You should have stopped there. The rest is pure twaddle.

Fair play. Simple as that.

The ordinary British person, and I'm not talking about the mega rich or politicians who live in a rarified bubble, the ordinary run of the mill, everyday British person wants to treat others and be treated by others, in a fair way.

Fair play.
