Afghan President Hamid Karzai, trying to persuade traditionalist men to let women register to vote, said in a speech, "Please, my dear brothers, let your wives and sisters go to the voter registration process. Later, you can control who she votes for, but please, let her go."
My grandmother was a tactful, low-key suffragette--although she always planted yellow flowers in the front garden as a sign that that household supported giving women the vote.
When the constitutional amendment passed she went from house to house helping women register. A number of husbands were vociferously opposed to the idea, but Grandmother took them aside and explained that they would really have two ballots, since they would be able to tell their wives how they should vote.
Then she made a second visit to the women and reminded them that on Election Day their menfolks would be on the other side of the curtain with no way of knowing how the women marked their ballots.
P.S. I have a friend in NYC who is very active with refugee groups of Afghani women. Frequently the husbands are resistant to their wives taking lessons in English. She's found the most effective way to overcome this resistance is to explain that taking ESL classes is not dignified for a man, but a very suitable American occupation for a woman.
So...you come by this honestly, Noddy?!
Looks like the Holy States of Superiority got more in common with those muslim savvages than some of you Superiors ever expected.
Gosh I just love being not American and able to write and say stuff like that all the time :-D

actually should you want to catch flies, try a dead squirrel.
Dyslexia--
Those protein-loving flies are another breed. Was the dead squirrel terribly inconvenient?
Oh. Lean protein flies. How inspiring.
Wow, he really said that? A man of principle, huh?
Yup, he's really into democracy!
Noddy, interesting stuff! You're like an almanac!
A "susy" by any reincarnation is still sweet. Thanks for the kind words.
