I believe the answer is decking on bridges, but i could be wrong.

Ever see a side walk? Concrete expands in the heat and shrinks in the cold. Expansion joints allow for this and help avoid cracking by preventing contact. Concrete would be the most common use.

Some metals have the same qualities. And the expansion joint is employed the same way to stop metal on metal stress that could lead to possible malfunctions.

Only Jamaicans roll expansion joints...although they call them "spliffs" or something like that.

Expansion joints are typically used in systems that change temperature causing them to expand and contract. The expansion joint is a flex system that absorbs the movement so the structure doesn't buckle. Just google it and you will see plenty of examples.

The common use of an expansion joint is to connect two or more things such as structural members that change size, for instance as a result of temperature change.
