Your contribution to life/society/the world

I came across an old pic of a friend from the 60's. Long hair with a headband. Of course there's nothing wrong with that but knowing this person well my first thought was 'what is/was/has been his or my contribution to life'? 'J' is still the anti-establishment type from the 60's. The anti Viet Nam, pro drugs, adherents to the messages in all that great music back then. J and I took part in many protest demonstrations. He still lives the hippy philosophy, attitude muchly. But now I am trying to gain an understanding of the causes of all the trouble in the world and what if anything I can do to make things better.
The hippy culture from that time gave many young people an anchor, a place to have an identity but in reality it was just a mask. Looking back I can see how most all of us had no clue of what life was about or where we were going. So I contemplate was my contribution a net negative or positive? For me it was 98% crap. Only self interest, hedonism, alcohol, pot. I see the harm done to my wife and kids by being exposed to my personality.
I still have a lot of dysfunctional thinking habits. And I see so many young people today-gang bangers, drug users and dealers-even in my small home town. I want to ask them the same. What will be your contribution to life? I want to point out to them how they are only followers of peers doing the same as they. And I wonder what drives a person to be that way? Is it a basic lack of self confidence or fear of trying to achieve a life?
Then there are others who got a solid job or even a higher level education and made a career for themselves. That is a net positive contribution in my view.
Back to me and 'J' who were so short sighted we couldn't see past our own egos. Only looking for fun and to be seen as cool. I'm not at all proud of what I have done with my life even thought there is nothing there in the way of hurting others or law breaking on a larger scale.
High level psychologists who use very deep hypnosis to take patients to that place they call the life between lives or incarnations report that when we leave this life we review- accompanied by our guides and peers what this past life has been. Then we make plans for the next learning experience. I have little to be proud of. I only hope I have gained somehow from this life experience.
