The Virtual Vacation

My van went in the shop with transmission problems yesterday. Later that day, the brakes went on the other van so both our vans are in the shop.
We also then had to rent a van to get our stuff to an event. This all cost a good chunk of money, and no van back until later today, then we still only have one.

Now this is not going to send us to the poorhouse but it pretty much screwed our plans for doing anything over the long weekend, so I suggested a virtual vacation to the family.

Here's how it goes:

First we thoroughly clean the house, because no one likes to come home from vacation to a dirty house.

Then we argue over our destination, finally settling on something that no one is completely happy with.

We will then pack the van, taking great pains to forget a couple of important things, like Stephens medication or something that will cause us to have to turn around and go back to the house and add 90 minutes to our trip.

We will then sit in the van in the heat of the day for four or five hours, fussing over the radio station, who's touching who, and of course, filling the car with the odor of farts as soon as possible.

At the end of this 4 to 5 hour time period in which we haven't left the driveway, I will open all the car doors and say " You know, no matter how much fun you have on vacation, it's always good to get back home"

Then we'll go in and I'll make everyone turn in early because we've had such a long day.

I have run this by squinney and my daughter Kylie, and it has NOT been well received, and I expect my boy cubs will be equally unappreciative of my thought and planning.

Honestly, you do your best and no one cares. I'm going to my room. Mad

Best of all, you can really make good on the threat to "stop this car right now" if the cubs act up.

My oldest boy cub learned that hard lesson several years ago on the way back to Raleigh from Charlotte. He was in the very back of the van and was acting as horrid as only a willful bear cub can, and I asked him if he wanted me to pull the van over and snatch him out of the back. He replied "Yeah, go ahead". On the interstate at 70 miles per hour I slammed on the brakes, pulled the van onto the shoulder and jerked him out of it so fast even squinney didn't know what was happening.

He was well behaved the rest of the way back to Raleigh. My cubs seldom challenge me in that way.

Just think, bear...when the inevitable "Are we there yet?" starts up, you can say, "Yes!" and throw the cub outta the van.

Don't forget the part where you all eat the really greasy maybe-its-beef-maybe-its-not burgers.

You'll have to pre-cook them and then put them in a paper bag under the front seat. Don't forget the limp pickles.

(limp pickles is a trademark name for a beerbar band and cannot be stolen or used for any other purposes other than this thread without express written permission from Sharky the bassman.)

Somehow I can't visualize Bear, Squinney, and the kids jumping into a van and going on vacation. It just seems too..... common.

That sort of behavior is reserved for us mere mortals. I would expect the BiPolar clan to get whisked to the airport in a stretch limousine, BiPolar stretched comfortably on the plush leather seats, smoking his pipe and watching replays of Alistair Cooke's "Masterpiece Theater".

Squinney would be on the phone to London telling her manservant Jeeves, "No, Jeeves, we will not be staying in the country manor this weekend, but rather the penthouse suite at the Ritz. Please make the arrangement, draw me a bath, and place a dozen yellow roses on the window sill. And leave a bag of Doritos on the table for the Bear. You know how he loves those things."

The children will simply be seated quietly in the limo, looking lovingly at their parents and hoping one day they may acquire such magnificent human traits.

Anyhow, that's kinda how I had the BiPolar clan pegged.

Just can't see a van anywhere in the equation.

Welcome sonny. No there are no good avatars, just look at what bipolar bear is reduced to using and you'll see what I'm talking about.
