I am trying to identify the artist of this marine gouache. I have been told that it is probably from around 1850. It is unsigned. The vessel might be American, British or Canadian.

Thank you, FM...I really needed a laugh right now...even if it did scare the cat when I made the outburst while he was resting on my lap.
Looks late 19th centruy French to me. Note the fine brush technique and vivid colors of the waves as they break across the bow. The artist conveys a feeling of empathy for the plight of the steamship sailors as they cross the freezing Atlantic.
Oh, wait...I was looking at my screensaver. Sorry.
