Just a thought - is there any chance you are looking at this from the wrong end, and it's supposed to be SURRENDER? That would still mean the A is wrong.

Thanks for that, l had just two letters wrong but my letters certainly looked as it should be SURRENDERS. I had the word backwards at first as sometimes in the spirogam the clues do come out as the word needed by being spelt backwards.
