My grandmother was a fabulous cook. I wish I had her recipe for German Potato salad or even plain old parsley potatoes. I have her sauerbraten, sauerkraut, oyster stew, crab cake and the best corned beef recipe, ever. She was of Irish heritage but as a young single mom in the 1920's she kept house for her aunt who married a German man who ran a big mortuary in Baltimore. Julie learned to make tons of wonderful things while managing the household and caring for my mom, and her 3 cousins. No one could pad oysters like my grandmother. Stories from the funeral home were treasures.
