Why the hell doesn't this site have a tractor repair forum?

I've spent the better part of the morning looking for the tractor repair forum here on A2K and it appears there isn't one. I'll just have to post my question here in the General forum and hope someone has an answer.

I was driving my tractor this morning when I noticed a hell of a lot of black smoke pouring out of the exhaust. At the time I was dragging my stonebolt with a load of rocks on it out to the ravine. I eased up to side side of the ravine, shut down the tractor, and started pushing the rocks over the edge. When I started the tractor back up...the exhaust was normal!

Here's my guess as to what's happening: I think the needle valve in the carburetor is leaking when the engine is shut off. That's typical with these old Massey Fergusons. The leak will continue and fill up the air intake system to the point where it will seep over into the engine.

How many A2ker's have old Massey Ferguson tractors? And do you think I'm going in the right direction here?

I hate to start tearing this carburetor apart if it isn't even the problem.

Gus- Unfortunately, I have never owned one. Since I am reading of your adventures, I have developed a nagging desire to have one of my very own.

Are you going in the right direction? It depends on your viewpoint!

If you stick a potato in the exhaust pipe, that'll solve the black smoke problem (for a while!)

Just how old IS that tractor, Gus? It must have been made in 1957 or later, because the Massey and Ferguson companies didn't combine their names until then.

Bet you didn't expect me to know that, did you? Smile

Do you still have a manual? You can get a replacement here:

(P.S. Chicks rule, roger!)

Of course I knew you'd be familiar with the long and storied history of the Massey Ferguson, Eva. I think everyone on this site knows something about Massey Fergusons.

And, yes, it is a very old tractor.

Phoenix mentioned she's never owned a Massey Ferguson. That surprises me. I alway pictured her as a Massey Ferguson kind of gal.

What do you have, Phoenix? Case? John Deere?

Gus, my dear...

I NEVER joke about a Massey Ferguson!

You could try checking here if you have any doubts.

Thanks for the link, Margo. I was intrigued by this tractor...

http://www.ssbtractor.com/photos/2144.jpg

For Sale: John Deere 1010, wide front, 3 point hitch, PTO, starts and runs good, good tires, sheet metal is OK, has some dings on front of hood, needs grill screen and lights, power adjust wheels, consider a trade inn, priced cheap $3550

That seems like a pretty damn good price. Those dings on the front hood bother me a little, but I think I could fix those.

That's the starting price, husker. I am the master of tractor negotiation and I'm willing to wager that I can talk that guy down to 2850.00.

By next week I expect that tractor to be sitting in my pole barn. Ding free.

And besides, Husker, what the hell would you know about tractors? You're from Nebraska. They don't have tractors in Nebraska, do they?

im an MF with a MF. i did not know that massey even made a gas engine.

It could be a simple adjustment. See heres what happens. all them wasps get sucked into your blower and then get chewed up . They lay there overnight and pile up like coal dust. next morning, first thing when you start up. you blow all of the wasp parts out the toot.

.? does the black smoke smell sweet? Then its ants.

fire that mF up and get some field work done. Them kapybaras cant go to Burger King

LOL
You've got to be kidding! I've spent 1,000s of hours on Massey Ferguson and John Deere tractors. Granddad died when a JD rolled on him and my other Granddad was pretty messed up when his seat broke on the International H.
