Good luck charm gift ideas?

A friend is going to be traveling for a bit, participating in events of competitive nature. So the next few months are terribly important for his professional life.

Wanted to see him off with a, sort of, gift that you'd give to someone when you want to say, "Carpe diem!" or "Break a leg!". I doubt he will want to carry it with him during his travels, but it would be great if it's portable.

Suggestions?

@spidergal,
St Christopher is the patrol saint of travel.

Get him a small St. Christopher charm that he can tuck into a wallet or pocket.

I would suggest a nice sterling silver fish (or not sterling silver - I've a pair of inexpensive japanese fish pendants that I use as earrings) to stand in for a carp. A joke, since carpe means seize, but, hey, a reminder.

I just looked them up - there are lots of koi carp fish pendents online. Mine was much cheaper, if I can find a photo. Turned out that Sozobe had the same fish from a japanese store in her area, and used them for earrings too.

Here's mine - apparently a goldfish -

Huh, $30.00. Mine was something under $5.00, sans a chain.

another one -

This one is a sterling fish, for men -

Thanks, beth, tai chi, and osso, for your suggestion!

I actually really like both of these ideas, but here's a catch (there are two, in fact):

1) This friend might not appreciate a St. Christopher even if I explain its importance. I haven't known him for long, but given his lack of interest in any kind of religion, including his own -- he's a Hindu -- I doubt whether he will like it. He might appreciate the carp, but again, I'll have to explain quite a bit.

2) It might be difficult to find these in shops around here.

But I realize some kind of pendant would be the way to go. So thanks for getting my started!

@spidergal,
How about a working compass pendant or ring?
