I liked what he had to say but I really wish we had some context into what was happening in class that day. The sad truth is that teachers don't get to decide what to teach or really even how to teach it anymore.
I saw an interview with him where he said that he had dropped out a couple of years ago and had just returned to school after realizing how important graduating was.

There were a few teachers I would have liked to gone off on . . . regurgitate was about all we were expected to do (read the chapter and answer the questions at the end; turn it in at the end of class)
On the other hand, teachers don't have much say in materials today. There is pressure on them to meet state set goals and so they teach to the tests the state gives them to measure "education."
