Can anybody please help me with these clues

177a withstanding (WE?L???GN?)
87a contradicts (O?F?GNS)
199d indiscreet (I?P?I??C)
228a ephemeral (E?AN????E??)
265d cavalry soldier (IR????R)
l know that there are letters that are incorrect but getting these clues will help me with the rest of the puzzle.
Any help would be very much appreciated. ttfn

Not sure they are all right. Some letter counts are different to what you've given.
