@fresco,
cherrie asked:
Quote:25a 'agree climb was discussed'[6] The answer is either 'assent' or 'ascent'
and you posited:
Quote:IMO That answer is because "agree" is a verb but "climb" is both a verb and a noun. The noun "climb" is required as the object of "discussion", hence the answer is "ascent"
im<ho this misconstrues the intent of the question.
'climb was discussed' implies that the 'discussion' relates to 'climb' given the two words are contiguous, ( discussion, reported, heard are euphemisms for homonyms in cryptic cruciverbalist parlance) so the cryptic clue is a word that sounds like a word that means climb ie. a homonym for ascent.
ergo the straight clue is agree and the answer is assent
it remains a possibility (in a cryptic world devoid of logic) that the homonym relates to agree and that the answer is ascent but your reasoning does not allude to the implied sound nor address the position of the 'sound instruction'.
