Thanks Dutchy, but could you please explain your reasoning, because I don't understand why it's ASCENT rather than ASSENT. Maybe I'm missing something.

1. agreement, consent
2. to agree.

Quite a difference between the two word definitions.

Yes, there is quite a difference, but the clue contains both 'agree' and 'climb', giving both 'assent' and 'ascent', so I am still missing something.

IMO That answer is because "agree" is a verb but "climb" is both a verb and a noun. The noun "climb" is required as the object of "discussion", hence the answer is "ascent"

the consideration of subject and predicate ( noun and verb) is moot because the words used are "was discussed" not "discussion".

The noun ascent=climb. The noun agreement =assent.
But I take the point about the mootness.

Assent is the answer that the crossword puzzler intends as far as I can determine from the juxtaposition of the clues.
