A question from someone new to cryptic crosswords - When solving a cryptic clue i.e. "Agree climb was discussed (6)", is the answer assent as in the agree part of the clue or ascent as in the climb part of the clue?

@macmax,
It's assent. Most of the time, the actual definition is at the very beginning or end of a cryptic clue.

I totally concur, if the 'actual definition' isn't at the beginning or the end it's in the middle. And your fortune cookie says you have the uncanny ability make people smile.

'Climb' and 'was discussed' are contiguous so the cryptic clue is a homonym of a 'climb' ie. ascent and the straight clue is 'agree' ie. assent.

Oops, I don't do crosswords sry.
