Gross Domestic Product and Ethics

Many economists today are questioning the modern obsession with GDP.
Economics is presumably a form of science, and is not an ethical value. The Gross Domestic Product is a form of measurement, and is not a value. Ethical values can only be found in the purpose, or use, to which the economy is put. Therefore making the economy ethical, consists in deciding the end value in view, and then using the GDP or some other measure with specific goals.
In its present form the GDP does little more than measure the gross national total of goods being produced by the population as a mass of individuals. It pays no particular attention to the environment, and providing the environment remains survivable, has no necessary interest in nature, or even human culture. It would appear to be ideally suited to anarchism based on autonomous families merely avoiding conflict.
If our world were some form of tyranny, with concern only with an elite and a philosophical system unconcerned with individuals other than as servants of its 'god', some respect for the environment may incidentally be involved.
If our global society is altruistically egalitarian, it is implicit that it is not only concerned with the good of each and every community, family, and individual, but also with nature and natural species, compatible with human life. Effectively, we would not be where we are now. In an overpopulated world with nature being rapidly denuded, and species becoming extinct. We would be living in 'national' or other communities that respect each other, and which are in a fairly fixed balance with their environment. The GDP would be ignored, with wealth dependent on progress in technology rather than quantity of goods.

I really don't like the idea of letting the nature suffer in order to increase the GDP of the country. There are many ways to increase the GDP, they just need to find out.
