A Paradox...

I have recently come to a conclusion. To begin, the material body, or brain more importantly, is simply a system. It is a unique system, but in the nature of any system, it simply does what it is designed to do, whether that be by natural selection or any other means. That design is to perceive the material world, and do what it takes to survive and reproduce, just like any other life on the planet.

It can be easily assumed that the nature of the human system is really no different than the nature of a computer, or biological robot, comprised of organic parts. If it is true that we are only organic robots, then a few questions can be raised:

1. How are we aware of our nature?

2. Is the source of this awareness a soul, somehow apart from our material nature, and yet observing our material experience?

If the answer to the second question is yes, then it answers the first question.

Assuming the answer of yes, the conclusion is actually somewhat of a paradox if there are no holes in my assumptions, and that is:

We are organic robots, we are aware of this, and the source of this awareness is a soul, but to be aware of the soul, it has to be observable to the organic robot, which is impossible, as the the organic robot can only perceive the material world.

So by virtue of the paradox, a soul is impossible

I doubt if a computer could formulate your discussion.

@PUNKEY,
abstract concepts are more difficult to put into words than they are to understand. perfection is impossible. a skilled mind, at least one more skilled than mine, should be able to at least understand the direction of my 'discussion' that is difficult to 'formulate', and possibly make it easier for even its originator to understand.

I guess, to simplify things if you didnt understand, a non-material soul cannot be perceived by a material mind, in a universe governed by the rules that ours is governed by.

The reason that is a problem is because what people assume is that their non-material soul observes and influences the actions of their material selves, but the only way that assumption can be made is if the material self first observes the non-material soul doing so.

Which means that if a soul exists, it is material in nature, which would mean its just another part of the brain, and nothing supernatural about it...just a conscience above a conscience.

@Epimetheus,
Why make the assumption that we can't be capable of perceiving both material world and soul? Why make the assumption that this is not part of our design?

@demonhunter,
to have an answer if that is not the case. it's an 'if A is true, then B' situation. the 'if' is still there of course, and simply shows that if the universe does not have a supernatural creator, the soul cannot exist.

i, and no other, can prove whether or not a creator is the source of the universe, but i guess it helps to know that if there isn't one, then the soul cannot exist, therefore if you can perceive a soul, then a creator must exist.

the question you have to ask yourself is this: if you can perceive a soul, you are forced to believe that there is a creator, so what do you do? do you draw a conclusion without further evidence? this is religious faith, a baseless conclusion, but otherwise filled with hope and resolution

on the other hand, if you perceive that soul, and decide that it is simply an illusion in your mind, making your identity and point of observation of your material self just as without value as anything else in the universe, what do you do? this is nihilism, a grim conclusion

either way, if a non-material soul is observing or interacting, it must be doing so from outside this universe. the construct of the Matrix comes to mind, however self-contradicting that may be, but i think you know where i'm going
