Unity and Distinction

I have been wondering lately about these ideas. I understand both concepts to be important but yet I feel sometimes they are conrtary to each other. Paradoxical if you wish. Is there anyone who could clarify these concepts and make sense of them in our current context?

@Procrustes,
They are complementary as opposed to contrary.
Trivially any two "things" are "unified" by an act of joint observation/comparison, and are are "distinct" because there two of them in the eye of the observer.

@fresco,
Let me give the example of psychology for instance, is it complementary to have the mind in "parts" rather than have a "monist" view? Would it be easier to work an analytical process with with divided parts or study it holistically? (By the way, I'm sorry if my questions sound rhetorical)

I remember a thread asking, if two things are completely identical are they the same thing? But, yes fresco, it probably is trivial... (relative more like)
