Just wondering if anyone knows of any DVD's with a lot of footage of how they directed the production? It would be really good if anyone could think of any which are stage productions or operas.
Thank you,
pq

@The Pentacle Queen,
I just read the title properly.
I am a retard; by brain appears to be interpolating words into sentences when they're not really there.

@The Pentacle Queen,
Have you watched The Russian Ark?. The 'making of' feature is interesting.

@The Pentacle Queen,
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie The Banger Sisters with all the DVD extras that included a director's cut of his voice over throughout the movie as he talked about what directing choices he made in each scene. They also had interviews with each of the main actors who discussed their acting motivations for their characters and some of the scenes.

It was the director's first time directing a feature length movie and he was very interesting in his descriptions and analysis. I've watched it all several times and keep learning something new from it each time.

I own the DVD to Russian Ark. Never perused the DVD extras. I'll give it a shot.

@Butrflynet,
Butrflynet, you're referring to the DVD commentary on the disc. Many DVD's have it. Most are just the director or the star bragging about how much fun they had making the movie. A few good ones are pretty enlightening on the filmmaking process.

@tsarstepan,
The work-up to a 96 minute shot is pretty amazing.

@The Pentacle Queen,
Pentacle Queen, your best bet is to look for special editions and most if not all Criterion Collection labeled DVD's.

I'll try to rack my brain and drop a few suggestions if they pop into my mind from hereon in.

@tsarstepan,
I'm pleased to find out that Vanya on 42nd Street has a Criterion Collection edition.

It's a filmed staged version of the staged play (literally filmed on the stage) of Chekov's Uncle Vanya. My introduction to Julianne Moore. And Wallace Shawn IS BRILLIANT as Uncle Vanya.

Which is kind of a tease considering it comes out February 0f 2012.

You might also watch the documentary Looking for Richard (1996) which follows Al Pacino as they get ready for a production run of Shakespeare's Richard III.

And you might try:
Broadway Plays on DVD from

A FEW EXAMPLES (taken randomly):
Quote:
Theater Of War DVD. A documentary film taking a behind-the-scenes look at the Public Theater of New York's 2006 staging of Bertolt Brecht's "Mother Courage." Color, widescreebm [sic] 95 minutes.

Quote:
In 1995, Carol Burnett returned to Broadway after an absence of three decades to costar in Ken Ludwig's comedy, Moon over Buffalo. Legendary documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker and his wife, Chris Hegedus, enjoyed extraordinary access to capture the nuts and bolts of mounting a Broadway play in this video equivalent of a backstage pass.

So the option to get something from here might be the best bet.

I hope I didn't send you down the proverbial rabbit hole on this site and lead you astray.

@tsarstepan,
Exactly. That's why I specified the Banger Sisters commentary and described why it was so exceptional and educational on the making of a film.

Thanks everyone.
I'm doing it in preparation for trying to direct an opera this summer; I've never done it before and I don't want to make a twat out of myself.
