Think of this, a skyscaper in the middle of New York. A dime a dozen right? Well not like this one.
In this skyscaper each floor is dedicated to a different activity.
One floor is a giant arcade filled with hundreds of arcade machines.
Several of the floors are shopping complexes.
One is a giant movie theater
A couple are giant clubs with various themes
One is a giant bar with big screen tvs etc.
One floor is a bowling alley
One floor a game room with various pool tables, air hockey tables, table tennis tables etc.
One a gym
One a grocery store
One a skating rink
One a comedy club
One a carnival of sorts
One a cafe/bookstore
One a place for theater plays and a museam
A couple with various sports courts, basketball, baseball, hockey
A mini waterpark on the roof
A couple of floors are similar to chucky cheese in design, a place for parents to leave very young kids
One floor a fake casino, you buy tokens and can trade them in for prizes
There are many many more possibilities. You should literally be able to do anything and everything in this one place.
You get the idea, basically, the building contains virtually everything that people do for fun as well as a couple of the places that people use on a regular basis, a mall, a grocery store, maybe even a hospital and such. It's a place where the whole family can go in, drop the young kids off on the floors designed for them, the teens on the floors designed for them, drop granpa off in one of hte places designed for them, bingo, jogging, shuffleboard, pool, whatever, the parents can go shopping or whatever. The whole family can do what they feel like doing.
The ultimate hang out for teens and adults alike. Get sick of bowling, you can simply hop in the elevator to floor 24 and watch a movie instead.
There is no cover charge but everything costs money and is reasonably priced. I imagine people will spend whole days there, like they do at amusement parks. And you can pay for anything in the building with one card you can swipe in. You just put cash into it ahead of time and use the cash in the card as you go. It would be the ultimate hang out. Anytime people want to do somethign fun, they go there to hang out. Such a place could theoretically pull in a fourth of New York population to it every day. I imagine the average New Yorker goes out to do something fun once every three days or so. If most of the time, they opt to go to this one place where they can choose to do virtually anything, such a building could draw in a million people each day!!!
With 80 stories or so of stuff to choose from, there isn't a thing you can't do there. And you never get bored.
Such a skyscaper could singlehandedly corner New York's entire entertainment industry and make millions every single day.
The biggest pain in NY is from getting one place to another. If they build this right next to a subway stop and build a walk way from the subway directly into the building, it would be extremely conveninet and practical. And being a skyscaper, it would cost 80 fold less in terms of cost of property than if each of these activities was spread out like they normally are.
Wow, your wheels are turning all the time aren't they Centroles?
One of 'em is bound to land you big $$$'s some day.
Just what New York City needs -- a bunch of entertainment things concentrated in just one area!!!!
In fact, not in just one area -- but in one building.
Right "in the middle" of the city.
The lights are on -- but no one's home!
sort of a vertical Disneyland.
This is one of your nearer-fetched schemes.
Where do I launch the boat to go fishing? :p
Sounds like an overly ambitious vertical mall to me.
For some reason, the story of a friend of mine having a brainstorm after doing a bone comes to mind.
Ten minutes after doing some very special weed, the guy comes up with what he, in a sudden flash of inspiration occasioned by his wife's new kitten happening by, considered an absolutely incredible insight.
He shared it with me -- and took several minutes doing so.
Here is the "absolutely incredible insight" in its entirety:
Although kittens like to play -- they also like to sleep.
Now you might ask: What does that have to do with Centroles' great inspiration here?
Then again -- you might not!!!
The empire state building is almost empty, talk to Leona, if she's still in control. This might be just the place for your idea.
And put floor 13 back in, what's fun without tempting fate.
Who's going to pay for the transport infrastructure?
Would take A LOT of cars, buses, trains to move all those people.
Hmmm... Centroles' idea leads me to something even better.
How about we take an entire city, all the stores, apartments,
businesses and facilities ... and put them into one huge building?
No cars or busses would be needed, or even windows,
and we could seal the whole thing up so we don't have to look at
the disgusting mess of concrete, steel, and warped humanity.
Then the sane folk could live in the countryside
without having to be entertained by machines.
They are doing just that in Japan, within the next 10 years. They plan to build a pyramid structure in the middle of Tokyo Bay. Built from rolled carbon, it will house 750, 00 in hanging highrises, with a train system, walkways, shopping and businesses. All this will be powered by pond scum. Don't believe me...Check it out.

Bucky Fuller was a big fan of enclosed cities, he felt that it maximised use of resources. Trouble with this is that it is intended to appeal to too many people, you couldn't hope for that to be a personalised experience.
To feed and house the largest number of people with uniform efficiency,
I understand that the city of the future would be shaped as two elliptical domes,
and have public regulations requiring everyone to smile.
. . . The future is McDonald Land.
well, i don't think the idea of people spending most of their lives in one building would appeal to them.
that's why a city wouldn't work
but this building idea, a vertical disneyland as someone described it, could be a huge commercial success.
in disneyland though, adults can sometimes be bored. this place literally has something for everyone the shoppers, the gamers, the partyers.
Any group of people could go here and find any number of things to do to stay entertained. With the rising popularity of cell phones, I see no reason why an entire family won't go there atleast once every single weekend and just split off to do whatever they want.
i mentioned new york because that's where i think this idea could make the most money.
NY is notorious for difficulty with commuting. But it has a very efficent subway system that people could use to get here hasslefree. This way, everyone could just go to one place and do everything there instead of having to repeatedly drive, ride the subway, or walk all over the place.
But if it works there, I imagine minature versions of such building would pop up in every major city.
