2 brain puzzles I don't understand Sad

1. Grandpa liked to play jokes on his grandchildren. He gave Liam 35 cents. Greg 37 cents and Betsy 71 cents. He told them the one who figures out his logic would get $5.

What was the logic behind the amounts?

2. In the local grocery, the owner sets his prices according to a certain system. A cabbage is 19 cents, a beet is 12 cents, a peach is 13 cents, and a banana is 18 cents.

Under the same system, how much will an apple cost?

@mydisguise08,
If each letter of the alphabet is assigned a numerical value (a=1, b=2, etc.), then that's what their names add up to.

$.13

(Consonants are worth a penny, vowels are worth $.05.)
