Money is physical token of "a promise" to supply a negotiated amount of goods or services. It's "value" depends on (a) our confidence in the promise and (b) the value we put on those goods and services.

Insofar that "possessing money" gives power over one's material existence, such possession may acquire "social value" within a competitive society.
