I have heard stories (which may well be urban legends) about people failing drug tests because they had eaten poppy-seed muffins or rolls. I just gave some crust of poppy seed bread to the little dogs. I'm not worried that they'll be adversely affected by a drug, because there just wasn't that much there. But it does make me wonder about the subject. Does anyone know to a certainly whether or not a poppy seed product will put any measurable amount of opiate in your system? I'd prefer to hear from people who have some realiable souce for the information, rather than just "cuz i said so."

according to snopes it's true, they even state a federal bureau of prisons form for furloughed inmates that contains a statement asserting that the inmate will not consume products containing poppy seeds

Poppy seed tea and opiate abuse in New Zealand
The objective of this study was to determine the frequency and nature of poppy seed tea (PST) use by opiate-dependent patients in the form of a written questionnaire. The study took place at the Community Alcohol and Drug Clinic, Wellington, New Zealand, and comprised 24 opiate-dependent patients attending the clinic.
A total of 11 of 24 (46%) patients reported having used PST. In five patients currently using PST it represented the major source of opiates, and two had managed to withdraw from use of other opiates with regular PST use.

Fascinatin' Guys, thanks . . . i'm gonna stick with the multi-grain bread, i think.

Abstract
Development of non-narcotic (opiumless and alkaloid-free) opium poppy,
October 1999
A mutation breeding programme using gamma rays and ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS) was carried out for genetic conversion of narcotic ‘opium poppy’ into non-narcotic ‘seed poppy’. Two families contained 31 latexless (opiumless) and 23 partial latex-bearing plants which were identified in the M2 and confirmed in the M3 generations by the ‘ray-pluck’ method. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC)-densitometry of powdered capsule hulls (straw) from 22 representative plants also revealed that none of the five opium alkaloids (morphine, codeine, thebaine, papaverine and narcotine) was present in the straw. Six plants also possessed high seed yield (4.0–5.66 g/capsule vs. 3.39 g for control) and seven had a high seed oil content (50.7-53.5%). The best mutant genotype, LL-34 of the family C1-Comb-113-2, with 5.66 g/capsule seeds containing 52.6% oil was designated as cv. ‘Sujata’. This, perhaps the world's first opiumless and alkaloid-free seed poppy cultivar, offers a cheap and permanent (fundamental) solution to the global problem of opium-linked social abuse. Simultaneously, it serves as a safe and potential food crop with protein-rich seeds and healthy unsaturated seed oil.
My SIL makes a poppy seed cake with a walnut/cream inbetween the layers. The cake is really thick with seeds and very moist. It's an old family recipe.
I'm not passing that up . . .
