Why is there both lactose (which causes mucous) and sodium laurel sulfate (a shampoo ingredient that causes frothing) in my nasal/chest decongestant pills from Rite Aid?

My daughter posted this question this morning. I answered that because the Food and Drug Administration has your well-being at heart.

@plainoldme,
Lactose is a disaccharide used to produce a hard coat on the tablets and thus make them easier to swallow.

Sodium lauryl sulfate is a detergent used as a foaming or dispersal agent for the ingested medication. Probably used to increase bioavailability of the ingested medication.

@Miller,
But sodium lauryl sulfate is industrial floor cleaner that is diluted to use in shampoo. It's pretty bad stuff.

@plainoldme,
so is a metric TON of the things we eat,and vast majority of things we call healthy.
We are not meant to digest these chemicals in the doses that are being given which is the reason for so many health issues today. The chemicals in medicine and food is not found in nature there for should not be found any where NEAR our livers..

but.
this is a huge soap box Smile I wont climb on right now..

The concentration in the tablets is minimal. If you're afraid, don't take the medication. By the way, Na Laurryl sulfate is a common lab chemical, which is used in most biochem labs ( like mine ).
