A Happy Chanukah to all of our members who celebrate this holiday. Perhaps you will be so good as to come by to lets us know something about this holiday (for those of us from heathen, christian backgrounds).

Dr. Demento has played a great many Chanukah songs this morning, so i thought i'd inquire into the subject, as well as express my resentment at seven (eight?) nights of gift-giving.

Ok, guys, what's the scoop?

Well, first off, thank you. :-D

I haven't had 8 nights of gift-giving since I was a kid. At this age, we just go with one thing or so.

We light candles. Last night was night #2. So we'll end on the 26th. Hubby and I gave each other kitchen curtains. Pretty exciting, eh? Actually, we'll probably get each other something else after Xmas where there are sales. :-D

My folks and in-laws gave me gift certificates and the like, since I won't be traveling anywhere this year. My husband, on the other hand, is going to NYC to see his folks, so he'll get something more tangible, which I suspect will be shirts. My in-laws have also vowed to send me some sort of care package for my three big days here by myself.

We also exchange cards and there are a number of them over the fireplace mantel.

We'll probably make latkes today. We both watch the fried food but it's somewhat compulsory today, I guess. I dunno, we might also fire up the electric menorah, which I find silly but it was a wedding present (from my side) and hey, it's kinda cool to have something in the window. The regular menorah, though, is by the kitchen sink, for fire prevention reasons. We also have dreidels which we'll probably take out, but we don't have much to bet with so I don't think we'll be playing the dreidel game.

Oh, and this is the translation of the prayer over the Chanukah candles:

Quote:
Blessed art thou, old Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has commanded us to light the Chanukah candles. Amen.

It's kind of a low-key holiday for us, but it is one of the holidays that we celebrate every year (my husband and I aren't terribly religious, but we both find Chanukah to feel important to us).

Happy Holidays!

I had my annual Chanukah get-together with one of my dearest friends this morning. I'm a bit sad that I'm going to be missing her Appropriate Seasonal Greeting family get-together next week. <sigh> I can only be in one city at a time.

Happy Candle Lighting everyone!
