I want to fix a few bugs in OpenOffice, how should I do this?

I have a degree in computer programming and I use OpenOffice a lot! I've found a few bugs I wanted to fix, but I'm wondering what the correct approach would be. It's open source so I was hoping I could fix the bug then have it not just end with me but allow everyone to potentially get the bug fix. Does anybody know if there's any procedure I should follow for this?
