@edgarblythe,
He was in my all-time favourite movie, Some Like it Hot. As a result, I find it hard to fault him as an actor.

He was also in the very first movie I remember going to see in the theatre.

I recall Tony best as Harry Houdini. Forgotten Ira Hayes, however.

Yep, Some Like it Hot was great, ehBeth. I had forgotten that one as well.

Here's Tony doing the straight jacket escape, but I recall his having found the ice hole while he was trying to escape under water, because he heard his mother's voice directing him to the spot. She had recently died. Wish I could have located the trailer to the movie of Houdini, but google has again morphed.

Wonder if it is true that Houdini was murdered?

I believe my favorite role by him was in The Defiant Ones. Wasn't Sidney Poitier the other star of that one?
Also enjoyed Some Like it Hot, Ira Hayes and Houdini.

He was not, in my opinion (in this case, yes, humble), a great actor. But he was a quite competent journeyman movie icon; he had that indefinable star quality which sets the super-stars apart from the rest of the crowd on the set. And, of course, he was married to Janet Leigh, than whom nobody was more beautiful in 1940s Hollywood.

@Merry Andrew,
His daughter Jamie Lee Curtis hated him for marrying Christine Kaufmann.

http://capitaltalk.org/read/5243/default.html

Quote:
Curtis was married six times. His first wife was actress Janet Leigh, to whom he was married from 1951–1962, and with whom he fathered actresses Kelly and Jamie Lee Curtis. "For a while, we were Hollywood's golden couple," he said. "I was very dedicated and devoted to Janet, and on top of my trade, but in her eyes that goldenness started to wear off. I realized that whatever I was, I wasn't enough for Janet. That hurt me a lot and broke my heart."[cite this quote] It was Leigh's third marriage. Curtis, who admitted to his infidelity throughout their marriage, divorced Leigh in 1962 to marry Christine Kaufmann, the 17-year-old German co-star of his latest film, Taras Bulba. He stated, however, that his marriage with Leigh had effectively ended "a year earlier".In 1963 Curtis married Kaufmann. They had two daughters, Alexandra (born July 19, 1964) and Allegra (born July 11, 1966). They divorced in 1968. Kaufmann resumed her career, which she had interrupted during her marriage.

@talk72000,
I know it was not the greatest movie ever made, but I keep thinking of him as The Great Leslie in 'The Great Race'. Again with Jack Lemmon (who I thought was brilliant) as a foil, I thought he was perfect for this role. When he first meets the heroine, Natalie Wood, he smiles at her and his teeth sparkle.
