I believe that if we leave Afghanistan tomorrow or ten years from now, the results will be the same, except we will have expended a lot more lives and money then than we have already.
I just read a snippit about the book, Dys. It might be one I want to read, and I virtually never read books on politics, much less decision making re invasion, police action, drones, et al.
Probably (will be horrible either way). So was Vietnam, though. I pity Obama, making these decisions. It actually seems worse, now, when people (no matter who, soldiers or locals) get killed.
I believe edgarblythe is exactly right. Their governments willingness to deal with the Taliban, and the corruption from top to bottom just isn't worth dying for.

That's also true of Iraq. Ten years from now, there won't be any changes for that country before Saddam. Violence will continue between the kurds, Suni and Shia for a "thousand" more years.
