what happens that causes the shortness of breath? why can the lungs not hold the air?

Lung diseases, blood disorders, heart disorders and on and on as all could produce problems in getting enough O2 into the blood stream.

Into why smoking is bad. I knew one reason was emphysema but i did not know what it was so i asked.
