@Bi-Polar Bear,
I found this article interesting
http://rwer.wordpress.com/2010/01/10/the-bakken-formation-%E2%80%94-hype-or-a-new-saudi-arabia/

I just read that new advances in horizontal drilling have made the Bakken deposit more profitable to explore.

There are 3 Native American tribes that will prosper from this deposit, though I can't name them.

I'm sure politicians would be able to figure out a way to deliver those reservations some modern form of smallpox laced blankets and cut them out of the deal.

@Bi-Polar Bear,
The Bakken is an old prospect play that has, in the past delivered up oil estimates from 500Billion Barrels to the latest estimates of around 4Billion. I believe we import over 10 Million barrels DAY (and thats only the import amount)

Theres been a whole new generation of drilling and geophysical tricks that have made formerly "source rocks" now to be considered "plays" ( a play is a geo-geographic area with something recoverable).

The gas drilling going on in PA and Ny is making bazillionaires out of poor farmers and the BAkken hs a similr potential. The hell of it is that we are just lately dicsovering and re-evaluating entire sedimentary basins as oil or gas producing areas. I dont think that with the BAkken, we have the huge numbers but 4 Billion is a couple years of supply. SO it makes us a major producer again.
You must remember that these new kinds of "Tech fields" are being found all over the world. SO what were doing is pushing back the date of Hubbert "Peak Oil" curve by maybe another 20 years or so.

I actually dont like the idea of being so dependent on hydrocarbons for energy storage , Im ready for advanced electric cars and new mass transit and NUCLEAR energy.

I agree with that farmerman but I think that's a long way off and won't happen until the politicans figure out how to make money from it.
