No one is really too late, ehBeth. After all, there was another recent Wandel thread where everyone posted.

I love seeing the name "Wandel" in print. As a word in the German language, wandel loosely refers to wanderings, destinations, changes. The tribal name Vandal has the same root (they were a wandering tribe).

I doubt that your family name is related to the Vandals: that tribe was already called "Vandalii" by the Romans before were 'wandering around'. (A 'slaveni' tribe .... which became in German 'Wendelen' = "Wenden".)

['Wandel' has had a lot of different meanings in German: verkehr, gang, lebensführung, veränderung, makel, rückgängigmachung, busze, strafe, usw according to Grimms Deutsches Wörterbuch]

When I was a child, my father used to tell us stories about our tribal ancestry. But, after all, they were only stories. My mother did not like it when he told such stories. She always said "Unsinn!"
