Like many here, I am disappointed in the fact that a more progressive health-care bill could not be passed at this time. However, I would remind my fellow travelers that the history of progressive legislation is one of incrementalism; it often takes several tries to get things right. A good example would be Social Security, a program which is seen as the holy grail of progressive politics; and one which excluded domestic workers, many farm workers, and many minorities. Today passing such a bill would be a horror amongst the prog. crowd; but we eventually got it right.

We'll get this one right too - and in a decade or two, the Republicans will be defending this legislation, the same way they defend Medicare today, a program which they for years hailed as 'socialist' - until they realized how popular it is.
