@danon5,
Here's a nice shot of a T&P RR "Mainliner" as we used to call the big ones which came through at the speed of light.
This is copyrighted by the named person on the pic.
His site is online - just Google his name and something to do with railroads.

@danon5,
Here's a pic of me on the left with my two brothers and an unknown little girl. Out in West Texas. You can see the "Outfit Car" we lived in.

@danon5,
Here's old #643

Another view of #643 - this photo was on the wall of my parents bedroom for decades. My Mom said she thought this engine was the very last one to be turned into weapons during WWII. I have not confirmed that.

@danon5,
Mornin danon. Glad to see ya here. I started this thread to celebrate the train. I too was a railroaders kid. My dad was a trainmaster for the Reading Company but I never had the opportunity to live aboard anything, (I guess because the Reading didnt cover as great an area )

As far as my arm, please vist my DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS thread, time and all wounds pass (and new ones happen like ****).

Do you have any recordings of any US freight train (stem) whistles ? I made a statement about how plaintive and lonely these whistles sounded and that the reason they wound up being so low pitched (as compared to European train whistles) was because they needed to be heard for miles and the lower frequencies would travel greater distances.

@farmerman,
farmerman, I used to pronounce that READing railroad, but learned that it was REDing.

My dad was a railroad man, too. and when I was in Virginia, I saw the Norfolk Southern coal train and realized that it bought out Norfolk and Western.

The Powhatan Arrow in West Virginia

Hope this works.

@Letty,
My goodness, Letty --- such a picture. You need the big crane in my first posting.

Here is a pic of the crane that my Dad ran on the T&P RR in W. Texas.

Another shot of the crane on a siding with another train passing on the main line.

@danon5,
Farmerman, sorry, but, almost all my time on the tracks was during WWII - I don't recall there was such a thing as recording devices for ordinary people at the time. I'll Google train whistles and see what sounds.

Sorry for the postage stamp photo, but this is the best i can do. My grandfather was the station master and telegrapher in that depot for nearly 40 years.

I went to the railroad museum in Scranton, Pa which was great and has many impressive machines.

Also, the railway museum in Sacramento is wonderful (thanks, c.i.) and is apparently better funded than the Pa one.

I can share some pictures here if anyone is interested.

On the subject of paintings, I think the 1930s series of pictures which were done as advertisements for British Railways, principally to promote tourism, are very evocative.
