I don't think it is "rye", Francis. Rye is a grass. However:

The Common Rue (Ruta graveolens), also known as Herb-of-grace, is a species of rue grown as a herb. It is native to southern Europe. It is sometimes grown as an ornamental plant in gardens, especially because of its bluish leaves, and also sometimes for its tolerance of hot and dry soil conditions. It also is grown as both a medicinal herb and as a condiment.

Also an ell is indeed a unit of measurement, approximating the length of a man's arm.

Several national forms existed, with different lengths, including the Scottish ell (approximately 37 inches or 94 centimetres), the Flemish ell (approx. 27 in or 69 cm) and the Polish ell (approx. 31 in or 79 cm).

In England, the ell was usually 45 inches.

@contrex,
You are certainly right, Contrex.

I offer my suggestions for what they are worth as I don't have any of these magazines..

And sometimes I'm mistaken by some false cognates:

Herb (E) = Herbe (F)

Herbe (F) = Grass (E)

@Francis,
Hi Francis,
thanks for you help, however the aquarium fish can not be ORCA as this I'm sure you know is a whale and APEC crosses with this answer in the last position, so its E not A = OR?E, other clues are
Model T maker = FORD. Bat habitat = BELFRY. and APEC
Any more suggestions?
Cheers
