Your Tax Dollars At Work, and Other Minor Idiocies

Last week, I sent away for a document from my state government. I had accessed the website, and it clearly described the procedure.

This afternoon, I was out, the phone rang, and my husband answered the call. It seemed that it costs 50 cents a page for a document, and the item I wanted contained 2 pages, or $1.00.

So the man from the State made a long distance call to ask for the dollar. He was on the phone for a few minutes informing my husband what had to be done, in order to obtain the document. He then faxed us two pages. One was a bill for the buck, the other a cover page. We were told to include the faxed pages with our check for the dollar.

So, in order the get this dollar, the state made a long distance call, and then had to fax the bill. The State worker spent time explaining this to my husband. When he receives the check with the bill, he will have to process it.

I have a couple of questions:

Why wasn't the charge listed on the website, so all the machinations could have been avoided?

How much did it cost the state to get their buck?

Can any of you relate similar stories of some of the (minor, please) idiocies that are perpetrated by the government.
