Once my husband retires we hope to spend half of each year in Florida, the other half being here in the UK. We have private health cover here and would be grateful for advise about the US. For the record, we will be US residents as our daughter (who is now a US citizen) will sponsor us.
@Tarah,
You will have to purchase coverage from a private insurance company. Be prepared to spend about $1200 per month for the two of you, if you can find one that will accept you at retirement age. I would suggest you start by speaking to an insurance agent who specializes in finding American insurance for people moving here from overseas. You might also want to see find out about getting additional coverage from your UK insurance and if Florida doctors will accept it.
Check to see if your UK benefits cover travel to a foreign land.
You don't say how old you are, but if you are retired, be prepared to pay a huge premium for US medical coverage. And they won't do a partial - year policy.

probably not for a 6 month period
Ontario's (Canada) healthcare plan will cover certain out of country coverage for about 3 months (90 Days), but you need extended coverage from then on, and it's best to have a little extra for the whole time as well
Thanks for that. We'll be of retirement age when we go and although we don't have health problems now, we'll obviously still need the cover. We could fly home if need be, but that wouldn't help with day to day problems and emergencies. We'd better carry on saving!
