@OGIONIK,
for cast iron, I'd go to wally world and buy a lodge brand skillet.

I got several nice professional grade stainless pans at target for a decent price with vented glass lids.

why pay shipping?

(i like to feel it before i buy it)

@OGIONIK,
what are you going to cook?

I only have about 8 pans total not counting bakeware, and I cook a lot, but usually just for me.

@OGIONIK,
These or similar used to be available at army navy stores, if there are any around you (mm, haven't seen one in a while).

If you want a big skillet, that would be heavy shipping..

my favorite cast iron pot/pan is my dutch oven, with lid.. but, again, very heavy for shipping. Don't drop it on your toe.

Save yourself a bundle and go to Goodwill. I see great cast iron pans in there all the time for cheap. You might have to season them but that's no big deal.

You can also buy open stock pots and pans, (any kind of kitchenware, really) new and used, at any restaurant supply shop.

I second the goodwill comment.

I have a few pieces of le creuset thanks to goodwill.

the full set is 600.00
The pieces i have are retail over 100.00

I spent all of about 30 dollars on it.

every kitchen needs one good non-stick skillet (8 inch works good for me)

@dyslexia,
yep,

a non-stick skillet, a good cast iron skillet, a 4 or 5 qt dutch oven, and a couple sauce pans (2 and 3 qt) should cover most needs.

Walmart actually has a pretty nice all-clad set. We got a similar set from Sams Club 6 years ago and it still goes strong. If you want cast iron, though, I third the suggestion to go to Goodwill. Not only is it cheaper, but they come pre-seasoned. New cast iron needs to be seasoned before you can cook anything edible in it.

Don't buy sets. You get a lot of things you won't use very often. Instead, buy individual pots and pans that fit the needs for the type and volume of cooking you want to do.

Second-hand stores are perfect for buying good kitchen items, especially when you are just starting out and don't yet know exactly what you want. Garage sales are also places to find some good deals on cookware.

If you're looking for online sites to browse, cooking.com and amazon.com are good sites to look at.
