In Homers Iliad, Niobe is mentioned as a stock type for mourning. Then her iconic tears are mentioned by Hamlet in his soliloquy, in which he contrasts his mothers grief over his father, the King -' like Niobe all tears'- to her unseemly hasty marriage to Claudius.
