Sea/Tac for a day, with kid....

Mo and I are taking the train to Tacoma this weekend to spend the night with my SIL on the army base where she (and my brother, who is in Iraq) live. We're taking the train home the next day.

We'll have about 26 hours to goof off. We were planning on going whale watching but the weather is supposed to be nasty so I'd like to find something else to do. Mo really wants to go shopping at the army store -- that'll take maybe an hour.

Mo has done Pike's and the space needle and a ferry ride and some Seattle stuff. Since SIL will be doing the driving, etc., I don't want to make it a big run around so something in Tacoma or south Seattle would be best.

I'd really like to find some place an 8 year old kid could have a blast and burn off some energy so I could have some time to visit with SIL.

What is cool for a kid in the Sea/Tac area?

@boomerang,
Have you done the ferry to Bremerton?

(the old ships waiting to die are way cool...)

@boomerang,
All I can think of is that glass blower's museum/shop. Whatsisname... very dramatic stuff.

@ossobuco,
Here's a link. I think it's the place - PeaceandLove used to work near there.

@ossobuco,
Still not sure it's the right place, have to double check.

I was thinking of Chihuly. That might be Tacoma Art Museum for his work.

Ah, this is clearer, there is a Chihuly Walking Tour -

@boomerang,
There's a zoo in Tacoma - we went to it with the kids. I know that you want him to run around, but Gameworks is awesome in downtown Seattle.

Cool! Thanks all. I'm going to check out all the links.

We've done a few ferry rides but I'm not sure if we've done that one or not.

I'm just trying to imagine Mo in a glass museum..... It sounds very cool and beautiful though. I'm sure I'd love it.

Children's museum, car museum, both sound good!

I think it may be too wet for the zoo but what is Gameworks?

@boomerang,
Gameworks is 3 or 4 stories of various video games/pool tables, etc. It starts at the ground floor with the newest type of games and at the top floor (if I remember correctly), there are the pool tables and games like that along with the oldies - pacman/centerpede.

If you are in the downtown area - and your kid loves video games this is a dream.

@boomerang,
What do you mean? It is always wet in Seattle - just bring a rain poncho and a hot coffee.

@boomerang,
I can't believe I forgot this - there is an aquarium right in Seattle - right on the water near the ferries.

They have one of those 3d movies too. We saw the Mt St Helens volcano erupt in there.

Its been a while since I've been - we have family in that area.

Oh there is a flight museum (of course with Boeing right there) - I think they have a flight simulator - not sure - haven't done that tour yet.

I did go to the Mt. Rainer brewery tour - the free samples were nice.

@boomerang,
Not to push Chihuly and his glass works, just to explain they could possibly interest a child... and get maybe not this child.. (I'm not a big fan myself, but on an old a2k thread, a lot of other folks are)

Here's (apparently) his Bridge of Glass -

Yes they do and it is cool. They also have Air Force One, The Concorde and other neat aircraft. You can even go into a control tower and listen to real traffic controllers talkig to pilots

The flight museum looks pretty cool! The flight simulator and glider harness deal would probably catch Mo's fancy.

Aquariums are always good too.

I would love the glass museum. We went to our aquarium's "Odd Water" exhibit recently where the tanks were designed by a local glass artist. I thought it was amazing but Mo just wanted to pet the sharks.

We went to the flight museum which was very cool -- especially the dogfight simulator.

We also went on the "Bridge of Glass" which was amazing. It isn't just that ceiling but a lot of different types of glasswork. Tacoma is a really pretty town, I had no idea. You must like walking up and down stairs to visit there.

Mostly we just hung out at the army base, Mo's favorite place on earth.

Thanks for the suggestions! It made the trip a lot of fun.
