Hi fellow puzzlers, I need to confirm two answers and also need help with some others, hope someone can help.
confirm 195d = RUBICON & 179a GAMBIT

36a Close troop formation = PHALANS ? these letters gel with all my crosswords but I can't find any reference to this word on the net.
87a Alter tack with sail = JYBE ???
45d Changeable = KA?I?E
136d Cannon's withering fire = GR?PES?OT (only word I can make is Grapeshot)
292a Male ferrets = HO?S

I have exhausted my resources please help! I haven't put any crosswords in so make some suggestions please!

@smithy,
Hi smithy,
Agree with all of Imurs answers except 87a. I have GYBE for that one. Jibe is a variant of this word too, but you have the Y from silentlY, so gYbe is needed in my opinion.
Good luck.
